Choosing the correct Insurance Agency and Agent for your organization

Most people think choosing an insurance agency should be an easy task. Pick the one that offers you the lowest price, right? Well that’s not necessarily the case and probably shouldn’t be at the top of your list of priorities when choosing the best agency and your agent. There are typically two types of agents;

  • Direct Writers: Direct writers are insurance companies that hire their own sales people to write exclusively for that one company; they work for the company that employs them. Church Mutual and ARM are direct writers. The agents work for the company and do not represent any other company.
  • Independent Agents: Independent agents work for the insured, not the company. They do, however, have contracts with multiple insurance companies and can usually offer you more options.

JPA is an independent insurance agency that specializes in insuring churches and non-profit organizations. Unlike an agent that works with a "direct writer" at JPA we work on behalf of our clients! Everything we do is done with that in mind!

For over 40 years, JPA agents have been tailoring insurance programs to protect the needs of churches and non-profit religious organizations. As an agency that specializes in protecting religious organizations, JPA agents have the experience to help churches address the unique risks facing their ministry. In most cases, JPA agents are able to tailor a program to meet each organization’s specific insurance needs.

Combined JPA agents have over 100 years of experience specializing in insuring churches and church related religious institutions. Our agents have personally tailor-made insurance programs for hundreds of houses of worship, schools, camps, and other non-profit organizations. Our office has personally developed individual insurance policies as well as group programs for organizations of all sizes and religious beliefs. At this time we serve the insurance needs of non-profit religious institutions in sixteen states.

The Partner Agents

[Joe Pekala]

Joe PekalaJoe is the Managing Partner of J. Pekala & Associates, Inc. Having assisted his father during summer vacations as a teenager, Joe started his insurance career in his early 20's. Since 1989, Joe's primary focus has been developing insurance programs for religious and non-profit organizations. In addition to working with individual organizations, Joe is the agency's primary agent on all group accounts. He has successfully developed regional and national group programs for various denominations.

Career Awards: Throughout his career, Joe has been recognized by the nation's leading insurers of churches and non-profit organizations and received the following: from GuideOne Insurance Joe was the 2008 East Region Commercial Top Star in addition to receiving their Superstar Award, and 4 All-Star Awards. In 2015 Joe earned a spot in President’s Circle for his sales and service! Church Mutual awarded Joe 11 President's Circle Awards, 6 Division Leader Awards. Joe also served on Church Mutual’s Regional Representative's Council.

When not servicing his customers' insurance needs and running the day-to-day operations of JPA, Joe enjoys time with his wife and three lovely daughters. Joe is active in his own church and heads up his churches Hospitality Ministry. Joe enjoys going to baseball, basketball, football and hockey games with his kids and friends.

[Stan Pekala]

Stan PekalaStan has specialized in insuring religious and non-profit institutions since 1979. In addition to working with churches and non-profits Stan is the primary agent for ISP (Insurance Service's Plus) which is a separate cooperation originally set up by JPA to provide insurance to for-profit organization’s as needed.

Career Awards: Stan has earned Church Mutual's ‘The President's Circle Award’ twenty times from 1980 - 2000. Stan was Church Mutual’s Rookie of the Year in 1980 and Regional Representative of the Year in 1994. He also earned six Division Sales Leader Awards for Church Mutual. Although he started in Church Mutual's Ohio Division, he was chosen to open the state of New York for the company. Stan also served on the Regional Representatives Council for many years.

When he is not working Stan enjoys his time with his wife Joyce and their grandchildren. He has various hobbies and has recently started playing in a local golf league and riding his new motorcycle.

[George Stemple]

George StempleGeorge has specialized in insuring religious and non-profit institutions since 1980. In addition to insuring churches he has extensive experience in a variety of insurance markets including personal lines.

Career Awards: George also got his start at Church Mutual. He worked for Church Mutual in Ohio as well as Texas. He earned Church Mutual’s ‘The President’s Circle Award’ eleven times from 1981 – 1999. George also served on the Regional Representatives Advisory Council.

George likes to go on cruises with his lovely wife Linda and spending time with his grandchildren. Recently George and his wife Linda purchased a place in Florida where they spend the winter months. While down there he handles JPA business when needed and returns to the Kentucky-Ohio area to services customers and spend a lot of quality time with their kids and grandchildren.

Key Office Personnel

[Shannon Pekala]

Shannon PekalaShannon is our Controller. She is responsible for overseeing the accounting, budget, tax, and audit activities of the company. In addition, she is responsible for processing group account renewals. Previously, she worked as Business Systems Consultant specializing in financial computer systems and business process improvements in a variety of industries. Her prior experience also includes designing, implementing, and maintaining new automated business systems. Shannon has a B.S. in Finance and an M.B.A. with a specialization in Accounting.

When not working at JPA, Shannon spends her time with her husband and their three daughters’ as well as other interests.

[Jenel Kosluk]

Jenel FulmerJenel joined our agency in 2005 as our Administrative Assistant and is now our Office Manager. With an Associate’s Degree in Computer Applications Management, Jenel joined our agency in 2005 as our Administrative Assistant. In 2015 she was promoted to Office Manager. Jenel is now responsible for the overall operation of the office and staff. Her responsibilities include (but not limited to) directing and when needed assisting other office employees in their responsibility, customer service, renewals, supplying certificates of insurance, processing claims, dealing with the agency's and agents licenses among other internal and external parts of the agency's operation.

She enjoys a good cup of coffee, traveling, spending time with her family and friends. In general, Jenel enjoys what life has to offer. If you want to get on her good side, send coffee!

[Cristen Koleda]

Cristen KoledaCristen joined the JPA family in November 2016. Cristen has a BA in accounting from Lycoming College as well as over 10 years of accounting experience. Previously to joining JPA, Cristen was employed as a senior accountant with Comcast and worked in public accounting as an auditor.

As billing manager, some of Cristen’s responsibilities include processing regional and national “group” customer renewals and assisting in the service of our group clients. Cristen handles invoicing premiums to group members and processes all financial transactions for customers as well as our agency.

Outside of work, Cristen enjoys spending time with her husband and son. Even though running after a toddler keeps her plenty busy, she also enjoys being with extended family and friends, volunteering, relaxing by the water, and rooting for the Giants.

[Tiffiany Potichko]

tiffiany potichkoTiffiany joined the JPA team in 2017. Tiffiany comes to JPA with over seven years of customer service experience as well secretarial work. She joined JPA after working as a Legal Secretary and an Administrative Assistant for a law firm in Doylestown, PA. At JPA Tiffiany serves as one of the agency's Office Clerk’s. Tiffiany assists JPA agents in servicing both our independent and group account customers.

When not working at JPA, Tiffiany enjoys spending time with her daughter. Her husband serves in the United States army and is stationed in up-state New York. She also enjoys cooking and spending time with family and friends.

[Erin Rodgers]

Erin RodgersErin has been with JPA for many years. From 2000 until 2015, Erin was JPA’s Office Manager. Her value to JPA during its infancy cannot be overstated. Prior to joining our agency, she spent 15 years in various positions at a large pharmaceutical company and 3 years as office manager for a produce wholesale business. Along with Joe, Erin helped develop internal office procedures in order to provide the quality of service JPA customers have come to know and appreciate to this day. She remains part of the JPA team and assists and guides in special projects when needed.

When not working at JPA she is enjoying the time with her husband and children as well as her extended family and friends.

[Nicole Berrang]

nicole berrangNicole joined JPA in 2018 as an Office Clerk and assists JPA agents in servicing both our independent and group customers. Nicole comes with over 12 years of experience as an administrative assistant and customer service associate. She also has 8 years of sales experience. She joined JPA after working in sales and accounting for a manufacturing company.

When not working at JPA, Nicole keeps busy with her husband, 4 children and dog. She enjoys attending and volunteering with her children’s sporting events and extracurricular activities.
